A villa wedding in Italy, from dawn to the morning after: everything worth knowing for a perfect celebration under the stars of the countryside.

7 am. The sun is already up over the hills and all you can think is: thirty more minutes, just thirty more minutes of sleep, please. But no. An avalanche of suppliers is on its way: precise, smiling and already in full swing, getting ready for your big day. Someone is unloading tables and chairs, someone is carrying armfuls of flowers, someone is building the stage for the band.

The real star of the morning, though, is the fairy-light man, climbing the trees with the grace of an acrobat: don't be surprised if you open your eyes and find him hanging outside your window, stringing up yet another line of lights. The best part is that a wedding morning is contagious: everyone works with a special kind of joy, between jokes, coffee and smiles, as if they were getting married a little bit too.

By the afternoon, the guests are arriving. And what a sight: stunning outfits, red-carpet elegance, gorgeous shoes, the latest court shoes, jewelled sandals on five-inch heels. Beautiful, let's admit it. But on a perfect lawn, a stiletto turns into a gardening tool: it sinks into the grass with every step, and you risk crossing the garden like a flamingo having a bad day.

Our advice, as friends: a block heel, a wedge or an elegant flat. Besides, we can promise you this: after dinner, you'll never find those shoes again. They'll end up under a table, behind a hedge or in some mysterious corner, and you'll spend the rest of the night dancing barefoot, happier than ever.

And for guests staying the night at the villa, there's one small detail to take care of as soon as they arrive: the villa will ask for their ID documents, for the registration required by Italian law. Best done straight away, before the party starts… and before anyone forgets where they left their passport.

Here it is, the moment everyone has been waiting for, the one no photograph ever quite captures: sunset. The sun slips slowly behind the hills, the sky glows pink, orange and gold, and the countryside seems to hold its breath. The shadows of the cypresses stretch across the fields, the first fairy lights flicker on among the trees, glasses clink and the music begins to rise.

For a moment everything stands still: eyes meet, someone wipes away a tear, and you know that yes, it was all worth it. That's why more and more couples from all over the world choose to marry in a villa in Italy: the stillness of the countryside, the endless views, the feeling of having the whole world to yourselves, for a few days.

After dinner, the magic

Once dinner is over, it's time for the surprises. Picture a beautiful film: the last glow of sunset over the hills, golden wheat fields swaying in the breeze, the couple sharing a kiss as a hundred sky lanterns drift upwards with their little flames, fireworks lighting up the golden fields, guests in happy tears… We have all seen those photos at least once.

But there's one scene that never makes it into the album: a slightly overenthusiastic spark, or that much-longed-for lantern which, instead of rising to the stars, decides to settle gently in the golden field next door. And there he is, the quiet hero of the evening: the villa's caretaker, extinguisher already in hand and not the least bit surprised. When, that afternoon, he saw the boxes of lanterns and fireworks arrive, he looked up at the sky, then down at the wheat, and thought:

“Tonight, it's my turn.”

Is it all possible? Believe it or not, yes, it is, if that's what it takes to make your day unforgettable. It just needs planning: fireworks require a licensed professional and the town's permission, and in summer, when the fields are dry, they are often not allowed. There is no shortage of enchanting alternatives: candles in glass jars, fairy lights among the olive trees and a sky so full of stars that no special effect could compete. And instead of rice, a shower of natural petals: prettier in the photos, and far less annoying inside your shoes.

A party under the stars

Time to dance. In the countryside, though, the night is very quiet, and that is part of its magic. Each town sets the hours for outdoor music: usually somewhere between 11 pm and 1 am. From midnight onwards, the volume should come down quite a bit. Don't worry, though: right next to the speakers it still sounds wonderfully loud, and that's exactly where the real stars of the party tend to be. Outside nightclubs, nowhere in Italy lets you dance at full volume until dawn. Exceptions are usually reserved for restaurants and venues; a private villa rented for your wedding follows the town's hours.

A villa pool at nightfall over the hills of Le Marche

Speaking of the stars of the party, here's a little truth: a private villa is not a hotel. For those days it is rented to you, and it is, to all intents and purposes, your home, with all the joys and responsibilities that come with it. That's why many villas ask couples for a simple public liability insurance. You may well have it already with your home insurance: one phone call to your insurer is enough to check that it also covers damage to third parties. Guests, as we all know, tend to discover hidden talents after the third toast: dancing on tables and some rather creative dives into the pool.

When the lights go out

What's left is the after-party, the part no photo ever shows: plates, bottles, boxes, miles of ribbon. Ask your caterer and suppliers to take everything away at the end of the night, following the town's recycling rules, and put it in their contracts. Otherwise the villa will have to call in a specialist company, and that cost would end up on your bill, just as you're dreaming of your honeymoon.

The morning after

Let's be honest: after a night like that, nobody is at their sharpest. Eyes open slowly, thoughts arrive in their own time, and the only thing calling you is that soft green lawn outside your room. Out you go, barefoot, the grass still cool with dew, the sun warming the hills, coffee in hand… while behind you a waiter sprints like an Olympic champion to pick up the glass that fell the night before, a split second before your big toe finds it.

Some wake up and dive straight into the pool, forgetting that just five hours earlier that very water saw it all: wine glasses, bottles, the odd shoe and who knows what else, which is perhaps best left unknown. To enjoy your morning in perfect peace, ask your caterer for one last check of the lawn and the pool at the end of the party, or to use shatterproof glasses where people dance. Your feet will thank you, and so will the waiter.

And now, the least romantic part (but an essential one)

We know exactly how it goes. From the day you choose your villa, your head will start drifting among the clouds: the flowers, the menu, the playlist, the dress, the colour of the napkins. The excitement of a destination wedding is so overwhelming that a few details inevitably slip away. So, with all the affection in the world: don't forget your documents. And above all, don't forget the groom, or the bride: make sure they've prepared their documents together with you, or you might turn up at the town hall in perfect order… and end up marrying yourself.

Our advice is to start at least five or six months ahead. Translations and stamps take longer than you think… and Italian bureaucracy, even longer. But don't worry: that's what your wedding coordinator is for, a patient saint who has queued at more town halls than they care to remember, and still smiles. Bring them your documents in good time, and they'll thank you forever.
